”International Mobility of Moroccan engineering students in France.
Socio-historical variations and transnational issues”
Conference by Dr. Yamina BETTAHAR
Student mobility is an old phenomenon, but without going back to the founding
periods, we can consider that the beginning of the 19th century marks the start of an
unprecedented expansion of the foreign presence within higher education establishments in the countries of Central and Western Europe (Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, etc.), which are the main host countries. In France, the reception and training of Maghrebi professional elites was initially part of French colonization in Algeria or the protectorate mandate (in Tunisia and Morocco), then intensified after independence and continued to this day.
This presentation aims to focus in particular on the reception in Nancy of Moroccan
engineering students, whose exemplary case has been analyzed, as part of scientific and technical training. Initially, the arrival of these students was part of the protectorate policy led by Lyautey from 1912, with the arrival of the first sons of notables, hand-picked. This is what we will endeavor to demonstrate by mobilizing archives to support our argument. Then, from the 1960s and 1970s, Nancy’s engineering schools, including the National School of Electricity and Mechanics of Nancy, gradually attracted more Moroccan students.
We will analyze these different developments and the ways in which these students are welcomed, as well as their social and family backgrounds, their social networks, and their socio-professional future between yesterday and today. We will use different methodologies for this purpose: statistics, institutional documentation, interviews and biographical background to highlight some emblematic figures.
