The Zambia Field Station was established in the capital city of Lusaka in 2003. Faculty members, researchers, and graduate students have conducted educational and research activities using the field station as their base. Collaboration with the Center of Economic and Social Research at the University of Zambia has continued since the field station’s establishment. This partnership promotes data collection and information exchange while deepening exchanges and discussions with local scholars. Research on rural livelihoods and social organizations in Muchinga, North Western, Northern, and Lusaka Provinces has been conducted. Kyoto University and the University of Zambia signed an inter-university academic exchange agreement in 2019.
Since around 2018, we have been actively collaborating with the Integrated Water Resource Management Centre at the University of Zambia, conducting fieldwork on interdisciplinary research themes spanning from engineering to humanities and social sciences concerning urban water and sanitation. In 2024, “Risk-based Participatory WASH Planning and Citizen-data WASH Statistics for African Peri-urban Settlements” project (known as the SPLASH Project) was launched as a SATREPS program funded by JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) to promote international collaborative research aimed at solving global challenges. It is also positioned as an ODA project (JICA Technical Cooperation Project). The Integrated Water Resources Center at the University of Zambia houses one of Africa’s leading laboratories for water quality analysis that was established by the SPLASH project for their collaboration research. Additionally, SPLASH Project coordinators are regularly stationed in the office equipped with OA equipment and other facilities.
