Research Summary

I have been developing a field methodology for studying African languages and is examining the issue of language and culture from the standpoint of linguistic description. In addition, my research proactively addresses sociolinguistic themes such as the issue of national languages or the issue of minority or endangered languages. I have conducted research primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire) in the 1970s and 1980s, in Senegal and Tanzania in the 1990s, and have been conducting research in Uganda since 2001.
