Summary

As global conservation efforts intensify in ecologically sensitive regions, pastoralist communities in the Lake Natron landscape face growing tensions between environmental protection and socio-economic survival. This critical landscape: home to 75% of the world’s lesser flamingos (Phoeniconaias minor) and a lifeline for Maasai pastoralists is under pressure from conservation restrictions, climate variability, and competing land uses. While conservation policies aim to safeguard biodiversity, they often restrict access to grazing lands and water resources, exacerbating livelihood vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, erratic rainfall and human-wildlife conflicts further strain the region’s socio-ecological balance.

This research seeks to address fundamental questions; How do conservation policies impact pastoralist well-being and socio-ecological resilience? In what ways does climate variability intensify resource competition and human-wildlife conflict? What adaptive strategies can harmonize conservation goals with community needs? By integrating field surveys, participatory mapping, and spatial analysis, this study will center local narratives while challenging the false dichotomy between ecological preservation and human development. The findings aim to inform inclusive conservation governance, ensuring that environmental protection does not come at the cost of marginalized livelihoods.
