“Traditional Beekeeping in the Adamaoua Region of Cameroon”
— Presentation & Film Screening —

Beekeeping is one of the most important cultural and economic activities in the Adamaoua Region of Cameroon. Most of the honey is produced with traditional hives consisting of bast and grass. At the same time, beekeeping is an extremely dynamic field and the trade of honey is directed towards the urban centers. The talk gives an introduction into traditional beekeeping in Adamaoua before the screening of the film.

The ethnographic film Gbaya - Beekeeping and honeyhunting depicts different activities related to traditional beekeeping and honey hunting as practiced amongst the Gbaya in the area of Ngaoundéré, Central Cameroon. The film first shows the highly sophisticated construction of a traditional hive by a beekeeper, who later demonstrates the harvest of honey from such a hive in a savannah habitat. The same beekeeper then demonstrates the practise of honey hunting. The film was produced in 2015 by anthropologist Martin Gruber and bee biologist Dorothea Brückner, both University of Bremen, in collaboration with Mazi Sanda and Adamou Moise of the University of Ngaoundéré.
